Ships Electronic Services (SES) has won the contract to supply and install the communications equipment on the new Condor multihull high speed ferry which will operate between Poole and the Channel Islands. At 102 metres the new ferry will be the largest multihull in the Condor fleet and is scheduled to commence operations from Poole on March 27th 2015.
The central installation will be the Sea Tel 4009 Mk3 VSAT system by Cobham SATCOM which provides broadband voice and data on Ku-Band. The Sea Tel 4009 has been selected for its advanced technology which isolates the antenna from the ships motion however extreme the weather conditions. The system adjusts at a rate as fast as 90 degrees per second which helps to keep it connected to the satellite even in rough weather when the vessel could be travelling at up to 40 knots across an unpredictable English Channel. SES will supply and carry out the VSAT installation along with a Sailor RT6222 VHF which is also by Cobham.
Managing Director of SES, Stephen Roper said, “We have a good working relationship with Condor having worked on several of their other high-speed vessels so we are particularly pleased to be installing the central communications systems on this latest ship in the fleet. This superb new vessel is at the fore of long range ferry technology and travelling at very high speeds means its communications need to be robust and reliable, which is why the Sea Tel system has been selected. The SES team based at our Poole facility are on hand to provide a quick and efficient installation to get the Ferry into service ready for its planned inaugural crossing at the end of March.”
